How can I go about enlisting my family's help to care for my mother?
By Donna Schempp Program Director, Family Caregiver Alliance

Question:
How can I go about enlisting my family's help to care for my mother?
Answer:
The best system is to call a family meeting. It is important that everyone has the same information on what your mother's needs are. It would be helpful if you had a list of the things you do for her and specific requests for the kind of help you need, e.g. take Mom every other Saturday so I have a day off, or take Mom to the doctor's appointments on Wednesdays, etc. Generic or vague requests for help are often not responded to.
If you go to www.caregiver.org, you will find a fact sheet on Having a Family Meeting, which might help you to structure such an event. It can also help to engage your minister or physician or social worker to help with such a meeting.
